CPSU/PSA National Child Protection Campaign - Social Workers

Coinciding with World Social Work Day  21 March 2023

Nationally, there is a shortage of Social Workers employed in child protection.

The current workforce does not meet the demand, and children are potentially at risk if cases go uninvestigated or are not responded to in a timely manner.

Social Workers play a critical role in supporting vulnerable families through difficult times and protecting children – yet this workforce is under-resourced and burning out under unsustainable caseloads.

Nationally, there are more children in care than at any time in the last 15 years, and the gap for Aboriginal children in care is widening.

We need a national workforce plan for recruitment and retention of a child protection workforce into the future and for the state and territory governments to adequately staff child protection to meet current and future demand.

Coinciding with 2023 World Social Work Day (21 March), the PSA’s umbrella national union, the CPSU/SPSF – The Child Protection Union  is taking action to call on the Federal Government to support child protection workers through funded education and training places to attract more people to the profession as well as a range of tax incentives to retain existing child protection workers in the industry.

On 21 March 2023, Social Workers in child protection around Australia will be taking part in a poster campaign to highlight the issues. You can take part to add your voice and draw attention to issues affecting social workers who work in child protection in South Australia. The work you do is so important and needs to be resourced, and on 21 March 2023 we can help to get that message out.

In just a few minutes you can download one of the posters below and have a photo taken sharing the message we need both state and federal governments to hear.

If you would like to write your own message, we can supply you with a blank template. Contact PSA Team Leader – Organising for more information.

Please send all photos to the PSA by 12:00pm, Monday, 20 March 2023. The photos will be shared on the CPSU/SPSF social media channels as well as the PSA’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
