Public Sector Rally at 12.30pm on 15 October 2025.

Have you received an email from your employer advising that you are not allowed to attend the PSA’s Public Sector Rally which starts at 12:30pm on Wednesday 15 October 2025 at Parliament House?

This is not correct – you are allowed to attend the rally and engage in industrial action including a stop work meeting, given strong protections provided under legislation and industrial instruments.

We strongly encourage all members, potential members, and family / friends / community members to join us and to stand together in our fight for better pay!

The nature of the industrial action is a stop work meeting for the purposes of attending the rally. 

This means that you will be absent from the workplace and unable to perform your duties whilst you participate in the rally. If the employer has advised that they do not authorise your absence from duties for the purposes of attending the rally, they therefore may not pay you for the time you are absent from work.

Have a discussion with your manager, let them know that you participating in the rally to support a fair pay rise for all public sector staff, and ask whether a long lunch break can be accommodated. Given the advice provided to the employer, managers may not be willing to do so, and so, flexitime may not be available. If you are to face financial hardship by participating in the rally, please reach out, and send an email to enquiries@psaofsa.asn.au.

However, the worst your employer can do is not pay you for the time that you are absent from duties. They cannot question your participation or take any disciplinary action against you.
