Young Members Network April Meeting report

Thanks to everyone who joined the Young Members Network Zoom meeting on Wednesday, 2 April 2025.

We had a really useful and inspiring discussion about industrial action—examining what it constitutes, its significance, current and historical actions, and the relevant legal framework.

The thoughtful discussions and shared experiences highlighted the power of collective action in achieving meaningful change. We hope this knowledge has empowered members to initiate conversations about potential actions within their own workplaces as a pathway to securing better wages and working conditions.

MAY DAY

The next big event for the union movement is May Day.

May Day (1 May) stands as a cornerstone celebration in the international labour movement. It originated from the struggle for the eight-hour workday pioneered by Australian stonemasons in 1856.

What began as a single protest evolved into an annual global commemoration that transcends mere opposition to inequality; it embodies workers' collective vision for a fairer society.

The Australian labour movement developed its own distinctive traditions of May Day observance which continue today, honouring the ongoing fight for workers' rights and social justice.

The PSA will provide further details about our May Day participation soon.
